In 1866 His Royal Highness, Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh was given command of the wooden steam Frigate HMS Galatea. Departing Plymouth January 1867 on a world voyage lasting five months, the Galatea visited Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Tasmania on the first Royal Tour. The Sydney visit took place from January to April 1868.
